VAxsure

a Tiny product with a big impact

About

1.

the challenge

One of the biggest challenges in the process of delivering vaccines in remote areas,  is controlling the Cold Chain in which the vaccines need to be transported.

A corrupted vaccine cannot be determined with the bare eye, thus creating a risk for the vaccinated person.

Poor infrastructure, lack of electricity and remote medical facilities in developing countries makes this an even greater challenge.

Impact of vaxsure

2.

A corrupt or malfunctioning vaccine due to a failure in the Cold Chain isn’t detectable with the bare eye, and this constitutes a high risk. The main risk, being a subject who is injected but actually not vaccinated, can have life-threatening consequences in case of exposure to serious infectious diseases.

The novel cap is factory fixed on top of the vaccine vial. The caregiver can penetrate the vial with a needle through a hole in the safety cap. Once the temperature reaches outside the prescribed range, the cap locks this hole. As a result the needle cannot enter the vial and the vaccine is not administrable anymore. Once the cap is attached to the vial it cannot be removed, this prevents the caregiver from removing the cap and wrongfully using the vaccine.

Solution

A novel cap for vaccine vials that limits the use to keep the vaccines qualitative features during storage and transportation within the ranges of the Cold Chain. When vaccines are exposed to temperatures outside 2°C to 8°C there can be a loss of quality - this novel cap blocks the use of corrupt vaccines to the vaccinee.

4.

Value

  1. Warranty that a vaccine vial did not reach out of range temperatures

  2. Interpretation process of the used indicators

  3. Ensure each patient gets the right, working, needed vaccine

  4. Ensure caregivers discard vaccines that reached out of range temperatures

About me

By education I’m a product designer, who has an enormous passion for the African culture.

Combining both, I focused my studies and thus my thesis on the transportation of vaccines in developing countries. During a 2 months field research trip to Tanzania, I witnessed this pain concerning vaccines. Resulting in the product Vaxsure being created.

It’s an ambitious idea to change the current production way of vaccines, but we strongly believe that Vaxsure can have a big impact on the health situation in developing countries!
